Starting point: Horsley Road, Ovingham, Prudhoe, NE42 6AL

At the T-junction of Horsley Road, take a right and head towards the church. At the church, rather than stay on the main road, walk straight ahead using the side road, keeping the church on your left (this will avoid the main road).

Follow the road round the church and, when you return to the main road, take a right.

Once you’ve walked past the Bridge End inn on your left, you will see a footpath sign directing you to ‘Ovington 1’. Head in the direction the sign points which briefly follows the path of the river (the river should be on your right) and takes you to a stile (picture 1).

Picture 1

Once over the stile, look for a second stile to your left. Go over this stile and bear right, heading for a gate at the top of the field.

Walk straight ahead, keeping the fence to your left (picture 2).

Picture 2

At the corner of the field you will reach another stile. Go over the stile and walk straight ahead across the middle of the next field. At the far side, bear right and continue into another field on a well-worn track, keeping the field boundary to your left.

Look out for a kissing gate to your left (picture 3).

Picture 3

Go through this gate and keep walking in the same direction but now keep the field boundary on your right. Continue to follow the edge of the fields until you reach a series of stone steps which lead down to a main road (Jubilee Road).

Take a right at the main road and you will walk into Ovington. As the road bends, keep walking straight ahead and you will see a lane heading off to the right (in a North East direction). Take this lane (St Andrew’s Lane) and continue down it for just over 1km, at which point you will enter a wooded area (picture 4).

Picture 4

Keep to the left for at least 350mtrs, keeping an eye out for a way marker on your right (picture 5).

Walk down through the trees until you get to a bridge over Whittle Burn. Go over the bridge and walk up the steps on your right to the main path. At the main path, take a left and walk through the dene for around 1.5km (keep to the left every time the path forks). You will ultimately reach the A69.

At the point when the path meets the A69, continue to follow the tarmac path as it turns and heads away from the carriageway. You will reach a small house on your left and a farm house on your right. At this point, take a left turn and head towards a gate with a stile to the right. Go over the stile and continue on the path as it bends left then right.

At the end of this track you will meet another gate with a stile to the left. Go over this stile and take a left to head South, keeping to the edge of the field with the field boundary on your right.

In about 250mtrs, you will see a stile on your right at the corner of the field (picture 6). Go over this stile and continue in a southerly direction, keeping the field boundary to your left.

Picture 6

Go over a stile at the next field boundary and through a gap in the fence at the following boundary (picture 7).

Picture 7

Take a right and head around the edge of the field. At the bottom of the field, take a right keeping the field boundary to your left as you head back towards the dene.

Rather than enter the dene, take a left and head towards a kissing gate (picture 8).

Picture 8

Go through the gate and head down the side of the field to another kissing gate. Again, go through this gate and follow the remaining way markers down to Ovingham.
